In 2017,the English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2007)clearly pointed out that " Reading is an understanding skill,while writing is an expressive skill,and the two skills supplement and promote each other in the process of language learning.Students are ought to develop their language skills through doing a great amount of special and comprehensive activities of language practice." At the same time,the section of the implementation suggestions put forward that the writing section mainly examines students' writing ability,including fluency,accuracy and appropriateness and the continuation of stories is one of the main test forms.In 2012,Wang Chuming proposed the theory of the continuation task which is an important practical carrier of the integration of reading and writing.In 2016,the continuation task was used in the college entrance examination,and it's found that the vast majority of students say they have encountered great difficulties in the continuation task.This shows that there exist some problems in the teaching of the continuation task,which requires us to explore the effective teaching strategies of the continuation task.This thesis investigates and studies the current situation of the teaching of the continuation task for the senior high school English classes,and mainly studies the following questions:(1)What are the teachers' understanding and attitude of the continuation task?(2)What teaching methods and techniques are usually adopted in the teaching of the continuation task?(3)What's the effect of the teaching of the continuation task?In order to study the questions above,the author investigated 60 in-service senior high school English teachers and 200 Senior Three students of Yantai,Shandong Province through questionnaires,observed the continuation task classes of three Senior Three English teachers and interviewed them,in addition,the author also interviewedanother two Senior Three English teachers.At the same time,the author also interviewed three Senior Three students.The results show that most teachers have recognized the advantages of the form of the continuation task in the aspects of cultivating students' imagination and innovation ability as well as integrating input with output closely,so they hold a positive attitude to it.While they also admit there exists some degree of difficulties both for students' writing and for teachers' teaching.As for the teaching methods and techniques,most teachers adopt the ways of interpreting the text,appreciating and analyzing the excellent compositions as well as evaluating the compositions together with the students.Besides,some teachers prefer to use the ways of mind maps and group discussions to help students understand the article deeply.In addition,the majority of the teachers have recognized the importance of students' accumulation of good expressions through reading a lot of relative materials,so they usually assign some tasks of extracurricular reading..As for the effect of the teaching,most teachers and students think the continuation task has improved students' writing interest and confidence,and it's indeed helpful to improve students' writing levels,innovation ability,the sense of achievement as well as the abilities of arranging the layout,wording and phrasing.
