In recent years,the concept of “core competencies” is put forward to develop students' necessary qualities and key capacities in order to make them adapt to the sustainable development and the needs of society.As a part of “core competencies”,English core competencies(including linguistic competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural character)is embodied in all English teaching activities including English reading teaching.However,little research on English reading teaching has been conducted from the perspective of English core competencies in senior high schools.How English reading teaching in senior high schools is conducted concerning linguistic competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural character? What are the problems in the English reading teaching based on the English core competencies? The author of this thesis attempts to investigate and analyze these questions by using the method of classroom observation,interview and questionnaire to reveal the current situation,and to find the existing problems of English reading teaching,and to offer some suggestions for improving the reading teaching based on English core competencies.For the linguistic competence,this thesis found that the knowledge of vocabulary and grammar is often cultivated,while knowledge of discourse and pragmatic is seldom cultivated in English reading classes.For learning ability,the skimming,scanning,and summarizing abilities in the cognitive ability are often cultivated by English teachers,while the planning and evaluating abilities in metacognitive ability,and the cooperative awareness in affective strategy are seldom involved.For thinking quality,the logical and critical thinking are sometimes cultivated,while the creative thinking is seldom cultivated in English reading classes.For cultural character,the cultural knowledge is sometimes cultivated,while the cross-cultural awareness and cultural understanding are seldom cultivated in English reading classes.The resultsshow that there are mainly four problems existing in English reading teaching from the perspective of English core competencies.1.English teachers lack the theoretical explorations and practical research about English core competencies.2.English teachers lack the deep analysis of English reading materials.3.The assessment of English core competencies in English reading teaching is not comprehensive.4.Not enough reading materials concerning English core competencies are offered.According to the above problems,this study puts forward corresponding suggestions for the cultivation of the English core competencies in English reading classes.
