Reading is an important part of English teaching.The reading teaching methods adopted by most English teachers in senior high schools currently are relatively monotonous and boring.English reading teaching concentrates on the learning of vocabulary and grammar,which leads to the poor participation of students and low efficiency of the reading teaching.The core concept of the new curriculum standards is to develop students' Core Competencies in English subject,and to promote the practice of English learning activities in order to achieve the effective formation of students' Core Competencies.The Core Competencies of English subject includes four dimensions: language ability,thinking quality,cultural awareness and learning ability.To improve students' English reading ability,teachers must cultivate their Core Competencies in English subject,and combine the cultivation of Core Competencies in English subject with reading teaching effectively.This study explores how to improve the English reading ability of senior high school students through the cultivation of Core Competencies in English subject through the methods of tests,questionnaires and interviews,and aims to explore the following four questions:(1)What effect does the cultivation of language ability have on students' reading ability?(2)What effect does the cultivation of thinking quality have on students' reading ability?(3)What effect does the cultivation of cultural awareness have on students' reading ability?(4)What effect does the cultivation of learning ability have on students' reading ability?In this study,the students from two parallel classes of the first grade in Feidong Kaiyue Senior High School were the subjects.To meet the needs of research,the control class adopted traditional reading teaching method,while the experimental class reading teaching was guided by the Core Competencies of English subject.In the one-semester experiment,the author conducted the pre-test and the post-test of reading tests,the pre-questionnaire and the post-questionnaire in the two classes,and finally interviewed six students in the experimental class.The experimental results show that in the senior high school English reading teaching,the cultivation method of Core Competencies in English subject was more advantageous than the traditional reading teaching method,which not only improved the students' reading scores,but also enriched the students' reading methods,and it was more popular among students.According to the research results,the following conclusions were drawn: the cultivation of language ability,thinking quality,cultural awareness and learning ability had a positive impact on students' English reading ability,in other words,the cultivation of Core Competencies in English subject improved students' English reading ability.Therefore,the cultivation of Core Competencies in English subject should be strongly advocated in English reading teaching in senior high schools.
