According to the Russian Formalism, defamiliarization is the way to realize the literariness of literature.Writers adopt defamiliarization to upgrade readers? automatic reading experience and enhance the sensibility of literary language through breaking down conventional expressions and techniques, which enables a work to be perceived as an artistic work. Therefore, defamiliarization should be reproduced in translation to retain the aesthetic values of the original.Mo Yan seeks breakthroughs in his literary creation, and Si Shi Yi Pao is one of his successful attempts. In this novel,Mo Yan?s ingenious creation embodied at linguistic level mainly includes deviated collocation of words beyond semantic and logical conventions,over-loaded sentence structure and parallelism with its over-regularity,and it is also demonstrated at cultural level, such as folk sayings and parody of culture-loaded expressions. And these defamiliarization devices form the special aesthetic values and literariness of the original. Therefore, how to reproduce these defamiliarization devices directly influences the quality of translation. This thesis attempts to apply basic rules of Professor Liu Miqing?s translation aesthetics, such as aesthetic reproduction, characters of aesthetic subject and object, and the translator?s empathy,to explore the reproduction of original defamiliarization, with the case study of Si Shi Yi Pao and its English version POW! translated by Howard Goldblatt. It is found that Howard Goldblatt embraces aesthetic consciousness of defamiliarization, and tries to reproduce it in translation actively. To deal with the major defamiliarization devices at linguistic level, the translator applies literal translation to imitate original deviated collocation. At the same time, the translator changes original over-loaded sentence structure into similar form in English in accordance with the expression conventions of target language,so he dynamically imitates this defamiliarization. As for parallelism, the translator imitates original syntactic characters to reproduce its aesthetic effects. When dealing with defamiliarization at cultural level, the translator imitates most original folk sayings by foreignization,on condition that these sayings are acceptable for target readers. In terms of those cultural images absent in target cultural system, the translator gives up reproducing them.To reproduce the original creative deviations of culture-loaded expressions, the translator imitates some of them with great efforts to overcome emphatical obstacle of culture. It is found that defamiliarization embraces important aesthetic values. The translator should actively empathize with the original, and overcome emphatical obstacles of language, culture, and etc,so as to choose optimized ways to imitate and reproduce original defamiliarization with his full subjective dynamics.
