A Cultural Discourse Study Of The Meng Wanzhou Case

Meng Wanzhou was detained by Canada at the request of the US authorities in2018,which has received widespread attention from all over the world.Given the entire background,including the political and economic factors involved in this incident,it is not a simple judicial case,but a complicated international political event.The Meng Wanzhou case is a reflection of the development of Chinese technology to a higher level.It is the intensification of the contradiction of Internet competition between China and the United States,and also the product of the current historical and cultural background.In the face of this crisis,Huawei,as the main speaking subject,should give full play to the role of its enterprise discourse in this case,actively respond for the solution of Meng's case and safeguard Huawei's legitimate rights and interests.This paper analyzes the Meng Wanzhou case under the guidance of cultural discourse studies,examining its process of discourse communication,including its occurrence,development,intensification,mitigation and influence.On the one hand,the paper makes a macro analysis of the speaking subjects,discursive contents,discursive media,discursive intentions and effects of the case;on the other,it makes a micro-interpretation of the discursive rhetorical strategies and the historical and cultural factors contained in the discourse of Meng's case.It is expected to provide people with a more comprehensive understanding of the essence of the Meng Wanzhou case and the discourse behavior of Huawei in the enterprise crisis.Through an in-depth analysis of Meng's case,the study finds that,in terms of the speaking subject,Huawei's response is mainly represented by the company's authoritative figures;in terms of the organization of discursive content,Huawei makes flexible use of rhetorical strategies,which enhances the effect of discourseexpression;in the choice of discursive media,new media is more widely used to spread its enterprise discourse.And from Huawei's enterprise discourse,it reflects its pursuit of “harmony” and “win-win cooperation”,its advocacy of “rule of law”,and the value based on the principle of “collectivism”,which are closely related to Huawei's enterprise culture and the traditional Chinese culture.Moreover,this study hopes to be of both theoretical and practical significance.At the theoretical level,the theory and method of discourse studies are applied to the Chinese major practical issues,which not only provides a new research perspective for the interpretation of Meng's case,but also broadens the fields of discourse studies;at the practical level,this study will provide some suggestions for Chinese enterprises on dealing with similar crises from the perspective of discourse.
