Jiang Weisong is a famous contemporary Chinese linguist and calligrapher who is also an expert in seal cutting.Not only has he made great achievements in the fields of language,poetry,rhyme,text research on stone and bronze,but also in calligraphy and seal cutting.His artistic practice has been considered to be combined with profound knowledge and noble morals,which makes him the representative model of scholar calligrapher.The achievements of Jiang Weisong's running hand calligraphy art are likely to be masked by his resourcefulness and skillful art of printing.There has been few articles regarding his art in running had calligraphy.Thus,it is of necessity to construct a systematic study of Mr.Jiang's calligraphy art and summary of his artistic experience so as to provide reference with respect to learning and cultivation,conduct and the creation of running hand calligraphy.Based on the earlier studies,the paper is intended to undertake the research from the following four aspects.The first is concerning Jiang Weisong's family and his main connections and travels.The second starts with Mr.Jiang's running hand calligraphy and then analyzes his writing style,conclusion,composition and the spirit of his works.That is,the general style of his running hand calligraphy is thin and stiff,concise yet implicit,maintaining a beautiful composition with sense of elegance and carefreeness;in his running hand calligraphy contains the spirit of an author,a scholar and researcher.The third develops a comprehensive comparison between Jiang Weisong and another contemporary calligrapher Xu Bojian.Firstly,Xu Bojian's and Jiang's conceptions of imitation are compared.Xu Bojian advocates faithful imitation while Jiang Weisong promotes innovative assumption.Then the comparison is narrated from the scope of writing style,structure,and composition to discuss the similarities and differences.What they have in common is that both of them attach importance to calligraphy history study and advocate innovation in inheritance;while the differences are Xu's "ancient" and Jiang's "new" orientations.Then in conclusion: in terms of inheritance and innovation,Xu has improved the classical calligraphic elements through re-combination,and Jiang has made a creative difference by introducing seal character to running hand calligraphy.In the fourth part,the inspiration of Jiang's calligraphy for the author is discussed.First:Artistic innovation needs related knowledge,traditional classical and cultural accomplishment;Second: it is an arduous exploration for artistic innovation.
