Informative text is one of the three text types in text typology proposed by Peter Newmark. When informative text being translated, the expression of the information in text should be of importance rather than the equivalence of forms. At the same time, the target text should be fluent and be acceptable by the target readers. In the translation process, the translation shifts, raised by Catford in 1965,refer to “departures from formal correspondence” and lay emphasis on the level of sentence and below. Therefore, the application of translation shifts is instructively beneficial to the informative text, especially to the report. The source text is from CUPB Self-Review Report for MOE Audit Assessment, which is a self-review report of China University of Petroleum-Beijing to deliver the information about its overview, achievements, problems and development. This report is an informative text.According to the characteristics of Chinese language and English language, the lexis, syntax and meanings in the specific examples will be analyzed. In this thesis, research is conducted on the Chinese-English translation of CUPB Self-Review Report from the perspective of translation shifts, which aims to provide some useful suggestions to strategies and methods for the Chinese-English translation of informative text.
