The thesis consists of three parts: source text, target text and the translation report based on the translation practice. The source text for this translation practice is excerpted from The Education We Need for a Future We Can’t Predict written by Thomas Hatch. It is characterized by factual descriptions and belongs to informative text, which aims to describe the current problems in education systems to help readers get a comprehensive understanding of the importance and necessity of education reform so as to improve education. The first chapter analyzes the educational inequities existing in developing countries and established educational systems. The second and third chapters dwell on the difficulties and obstacles caused by education reform. And the fourth chapter expounds on some reform strategies about how to conduct education reform. These four chapters elaborate on the problems of the education reform and specific solutions, and the content is logically connected. Therefore, the translator chooses these four chapters as the translation material.Since Catford’s Translation shifts theory pays more attention to textual equivalence rather than formal correspondence, the translator needs to apply his shifts strategies flexibly and reasonably to solve translation problems encountered in the translation practice, which aims to achieve the purpose of language communication between English and Chinese.Given the applicability of this theory to the informative text, the translator selects it as the guidance of this translation practice. In the translation report, the translator first describes the translation task. Then the translator mainly analyzes the type of the source text and expounds on Catford’s translation shifts theory. The third chapter mainly focuses on the case study based on the translation process and concretely applies the level shifts and category shifts to guide the translation practice.Chapter 4 describes the post-translation work that mainly includes a post-translation quality assurance. In the end,the translator summarizes and reflects on the gains and weaknesses gained in the translation experience.
