Critical Discourse Analysis Of Translation Of Terms With Chinese Characteristics In Xi Jinping:The Governance Of China II

Terms with Chinese characteristics are those derived from Chinese-specific political,economic and cultural context and with no equivalents in any other language or culture in forms and meanings.Xi Jinping:The Governance of China ?,a recent collection of Xi Jinping's speeches,widely involves Chinese politics,economy,culture,military affairs,diplomacy and public well-being.It plays a significant role in expressing the Chinese leader's political opinions,influencing public opinions,promoting his political philosophy,and building public mentality.Also,it is a good source for the international society to learn about Chinese leaders'thoughts as well as Chinese conditions and developments.Therefore,translation of terms with Chinese characteristics in the book is of great significance.This study employs the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis(CDA)to explore the translation methods and effects of terms with Chinese characteristics in the translated English version of Xi Jinping:The Governance of China II.CDA proposes that languages are determined by social functions.Differences in linguistic structures reflect the differences in ideologies.On the other hand,the choice of translation strategies,and methods also reflects the hidden ideologies.Existing studies of terms with Chinese characteristics focus on the comparative analysis of different versions and their effects.Studies of translation within the framework of CDA are rare.This thesis tries to dig out the hidden factors behind translated version of terms with Chinese characteristics from the CDA perspective.Socio-ideological causes of the choice of translation theories and ideologies are analyzed.In addition,the translation patterns and effects of terms with Chinese characteristics in the translated English version are explored.It is found that,the principles of translation of terms with Chinese characteristics in Xi Jinping:The Governance of China ? are "faithfulness" and“smoothness".The method of literal translation is dominant while free translation is supplementary.In terms of translation strategies,foreignization is mainly adopted.Literal translation may better retain the original ideological meanings but may encounter more difficulties in acceptance.The choice of these translation strategies and methods are affected by the hidden ideologies and social contexts.The CDA approach is helpful for the translator to understand the differences of ideologies and linguistic structures between the original language and the target language,so that the exact meanings and ideology of the source text can be better expressed in a way that helps the target readers to understand and accept,and the quality of the translation can be improved.
