A Study Of Holmwood’s Translation Of Addressing Terms In Legends Of Condor Heroes From Perspective Of Manipulation Theory

With the development of translation studies,the researches gradually concentrate on the external study of language.Lefevere,as one of the representatives of Manipulation School,proposes the Manipulation Theory in his masterpiece,Translation,Rewriting,and the Manipulation of Literary Fame.He holds the view that the translation is mainly influenced by ideology,poetics,and patronage.On the basis of a systematic literature review of Manipulation Theory,the thesis will conduct the research on the addressing terms translation in the novel Legend of Condor Heroes,which is translated by Holmwood.Besides introducing the theory,the author intends to analyze the translations from the macroscopic perspective.The 157 addressing terms collected from the novel are classified into names,nicknames,honorifics,endearments,self-abasing and curses.The main research objectives are:Firstly,with the classifications of addressing translations,the thesis should find out the influences of the three main factors.Secondly,the thesis would analyze the translation strategies and methods of addressing terms from the perspective of Manipulation Theory.The thesis concludes the major findings of the researches and evaluates the translations of Holmwood.In order to cater to the ideology and poetics of the target language,the translator does considerable rewriting work.Influenced by patronage,the domestication strategy is used to omit some of the cultural-specific items and meet the needs of publishing houses and the western market.The author also finds some mistranslations through analyzing,which are caused by translator’s misunderstanding of Taoism and some traditional Chinese cultures.The success of The Legend of Condor Heroes manifests the potential market of martial arts novels in western countries.Anne Holmwood makes a contribution to the cultural exchange between China and the English-speaking countries and lays a solid foundation for the following translations of martial art novels.
