Based on the translation of the popular science text of UNESCO Science Report 2016(hereafter referred to as Science Report),this translation practice report analyses the E—C translation under the guidance of the pragmatic adaptation theory.Every five years UNESCO will publish a global science report to summarize important global researches and major scientific development trends and put forward proposals correspondingly based on a large amount of data. The Science Report has the characteristics of objectivity and authority on one hand, and is more understandable and closer to readers for its simple language style and much less scientific terminology as a popular science text on the other hand.Under the guidance of pragmatic adaptation theory, popular science translation can be regulated and explained from the following three aspects:(1)linguistic context adaptation(2)language structure adaptation and(3)adaptability during the whole adaptation process and the adaptability is mainly in terms with the feelings that the translator and target readers express.Popular science translation is scientific in its content and vivid in its expression;Meanwhile, much attention should be paid to the adaptability and the flexibility between input language and output language in terms with the language structure. The report meanwhile has pointed out the status quo of academic study of E—C translation domestically. It describes the translation process in detail, and expounds the development of adaptation theory as well as its referential significance to translation theory. The report aims to provide some practical and useful methods for E—C translation of popular science text.
