| Adaptability,as a linguistic feature, enables language users to flexibly choose how to linguistically express, regardless of changeable and various factors, and meets the requirements of communication to the largest extent. This translation practice report is theoretically supported by the Adaptation Theory, put forward by Jef Verschueren,as a framework to elaborate the choice making and adaptation in context and utterancebuilding ingredients with concrete translation examples. It includes the adaptation between the original and target texts in the communicative context, namely the physical, social, and mental worlds, the choices made in regard to the linguistic context, which is composed of coherence within text, limitation beyond text, and linear sequence, and the discussion about how to achieve accurate and natural effect at phonologic, lexical, and syntactic levels, all of which are utterance-building ingredients. At the lexical level, the three parts,culture-loaded words, names of ancient Chinese works, and biological words, are discussed. To spread Chinese culture through the translation process, foreignization strategy is adopted to adapt to the end for the translation of cultureloaded words.By translating the names of ancient Chinese works of different types, translation methods and rules are summarized. To adapt to the characteristics of biological words in the original text, the methods of literal translation and addition are used to create suitable translation.Besides, the original text is a popular science text which combines scientific, literary, popular, and interesting features, varies a lot in language styles, and consists of biological and historical contents. This requires translators to make a lot of adjustment choices dynamically based on different contexts and linguistic structure and to adopt flexibly a range of methods and techniques, such as literal translation, transliteration, idiomatic translation, addition, and omission,so that the readers of target language can better understand the meaning of the original text. The report aims to,by combining the Adaptation Theory and popular science text, provide lines of thought and practical methods related to the translation of this text type, for reference. |
