A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of General History Of Chinese Science And Technology:National Treasures And New Four Inventions(Excerpts)

The material of this translation practice is selected from the Chinese popular science text General History of Chinese Science and Technology: National Treasures and New Four Inventions,which covers Chinese science and technology,history,medicine and other fields.By translating the popular science text,the translator aims to improve the quality of the popular science translation,spread the history of the hard work of the Chinese nation and promote Chinese culture “going out”.In this report,the translator takes the first and third chapters of translation practice as research materials,and conducts case analysis from the two perspectives of language structure and context involved in adaptation theory combined with the characteristics of popular science texts.From the language structure of popular science texts,the translator solves the translation difficulties of proper nouns,culturally-loaded words and four-character idioms by using literal translation,paraphrase and omission at the lexical level;the translator effectively realizes the transformation of sentence without subject,passive sentence and complex sentence in Chinese by using subject addition,voice conversion,long sentences division at the level of syntax;the translator realizes cohesion and coherence by sentence patterns adjustment and component transformation at the level of discourse.From the context of the popular science text,the translator needs to consider the cognition and acceptability of readers,as well as their social and physical world where they live while translating,and should flexibly use various translation methods such as paraphrase and amplification to realize the conversion of language norms and meaning conveying.This translation practice shows that the translator can effectively make appropriate choices under adaptation theory in the language conversion of popular science translation and successfully realize the communicative function of popular science translation.
