With the technical innovation in China and the development of technical communication between China and western world, importance is increasingly attached to the translation of patent documents. Particularly, the social demand of C-E translation(Chinese-English translation) of patent literature surges unprecedentedly. The C-E translation of the abstract of a patent specification(hereinafter referred to as “patent abstract”) accounts for a large proportion in China’s translation work and the translation of patent abstract has gradually become an emerging industry. However, for a long time, as people mainly focus on the E-C translation(English-Chinese translation) of patent documents, study on C-E translation of the patent abstract is still rare at present. Given this, based on the C-E translation practice of the patent abstract, the author sums stylistic features of the patent abstract and aims to explore strategies for solving problems that the author encountered in the translation process by following the guidance of Mona Baker’s linguistic study on translation in a bottom-up approach, namely from the perspective of lexical level, grammatical level, textual level and pragmatic level so as to provide certain reference for the translation practice of the patent abstract.
