“Thin”is a Chinese character with rich connotations and has important aesthetic value.Based on the Great Chinese Dictionary, this thesis sorts out and summarizes 10relevant meanings of“Thin”and analyzes the semantics and word formation means of words containing“Thin”.Taking Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty as the corpus, this thesis uses statistical methods and separates words and phrases into four semantic fields of human appearance, animal appearance, scenery appearance, and phenomenon change.Next, the thesis adopts the theory of receptive rhetoric to analyze ci poets'intention of using“Thin”in semantic fields and the process for readers to receive“Thin”rhetoric, and illustrates that the emotion reflected by“thin”is determined by the nature of the modified objects. Then, starting from the political model of“guarding against possible internal hazards and relaxing vigilance against external threats”and the ideological characteristics of“introducing Buddhism into Confucianism”in Song Dynasty, the thesis analyzes the causes of the frequent appearance of“Thin”in Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty. The whole thesis consists of five parts:The introduction mainly sorts out previous research results on“Thin”and words containing“Thin”,which are divided into three categories:linguistics research of“Thin”,literary aesthetics research of“Thin”,and artistic and cultural research of“Thin”.It is found from the research:There are more research results on literary aesthetics?art and culture of“thin”while there are fewer research results on the linguistic aspect.Based on this, the thesis introduces the origin, topic selection significance, and research line of thinking for taking receptive rhetoric as the theoretical guidance.Through comparing three authoritative dictionaries,Chapter One clarifies the dictionary meanings of“Thin”and sorts out 10 meanings related to the semantic research of this thesis, and tags them in the form of Thin1…thin10.Thin1 refers to skinny,Thin2 refers to tiny,Thin3 refers to reduction,Thin4 refers to barren soil,Thin5 refers to poor,Thin6 refers to narrow,Thin7 refers to straight,Thin8 refers to rarefied,Thin9 is an analogy of poetic style, and Thin100 is an analogy of calligraphy style. In addition, based on this, the thesis analyzes words containing“Thin”in the Great Chinese Dictionary and concludes that when“Thin”is used to modify people, words containing“Thin”tend to be negative;when“Thin”is used to modify fragile and small objects, words containing“Thin”tend to be negative;when“Thin”is used to modify hard objects, words containing“thin”tend to be positive.Chapter Two takes Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty as the corpus, conducts a statistical analysis of words and phrases containing“Thin”in Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty, and divides them into four semantic fields of human appearance, animal appearance, scenery appearance, and phenomenon change based on semantics.Based on this, the thesis adopts the theory of receptive rhetoric to analyze ci poets'rhetorical intention of using“Thin”and the rhetorical psychology of readers in the process of receiving“Thin”rhetoric.Furthermore, the thesis illustrates:Firstly,in the context of Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty,“Thin”can be collocated with different objects to form temporary words containing“Thin”and display a strong collocation ability;secondly,ci poets intentionally use“Thin”and the difference in the rhetorical objects of“Thin”shows the variation in thoughts of different ci poets;thirdly, the use of“Thin”reflects the recognition of the word by the society in the Song Dynasty.Chapter Three starts from the creation of ci poets in Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty and discusses ci poets'characteristics of using“Thin”:Different ci poets have similar expressions of“Thin”.Based on this, the thesis discusses the characteristics of rhetorical activities on“Thin”in Ci Poetry of Song Dynasty:In rhetorical activities, receptors turn into expressers to form the pattern of“expression—reception—re-expression”,thereby illustrating that preferring to be thin is a common phenomenon in the society of Song Dynasty. Then from the two perspectives of politics and thoughts, the thesis analyzes the causes of Song Dynasty's preference to be Thin.Next, the thesis illustrates that under the political feature of“guarding against possible internal hazards and relaxing vigilance against external threats”,the social psychology of Song Dynasty became introverted and the softness of“being thin”complied with the aesthetics of the society in Song Dynasty while the stiffness of“being thin”met ci poets'needs for being unyielding.Meanwhile, the thesis illustrates under the ideological characteristics of“introducing Buddhism into Confucianism”in Song Dynasty, the plain Buddhist concepts and Neo-Confucianism stressing ethics determine that“Thin”gets involved in rhetorical activities in soft and stiff forms.Chapter Four is the conclusion. It mainly summarizes the main points of the thesis, and points out the deficiencies of the thesis to discover shortages during reflection for constant improvement.
