This paper takes the appellation of people in Midnight as the research object,and from the perspective of sociolinguistics,analyzes the features of the social environment in the 1930 s by categorizing the appellations in the text,and from the situational language From the perspective of context,it explores which factors are affected by address terms in verbal communication.The first part is the introduction.In this part,the author mainly explains the origin and significance of the topic selection,the process of determining the object of study,the current research situation,the research content,the research methods,the research emphases and difficulties,the innovation points and the source of corpus in detail.The research status is mainly described and analyzed from four aspects: monograph titles,monograph titles,nonmonograph titles,and the study of titles in Midnight,and has a preliminary understanding of the research results in the academic world.The second part is an overview of appellations in Midnight.This section analyzes the appellations contained in Midnight.Firstly,according to the scope and object of the appellation,it is divided into two categories: relative appellation and social appellation.In relative terms,the relatives are divided into elders,peers,and juniors by referring to themselves.The relative appellation is divided into the appellation of juniors to elders,the appellation of elders to juniors and the appellation between peers.In social appellations,social appellations are divided into pseudo-relative terms and non-quasi-relative terms according to whether people use the appellations between relatives in the society.In the quasi-relative appellation,it is modeled after the kinship appellation,and it is divided into the appellation of juniors to elders,the appellation of elders to juniors and the appellation between peers.In the non-physical relative appellations,appellations are classified into three categories: culture,economy,and military administration according to their source and meaning.The third part is related research on register theory and appellation in situational context.Based on Halliday's registering theory,this part explores the constraints and influences of the discourse scope of different events,the diverse tone of discourse,and the symmetry of predicates in different discourse styles.The analysis of the use of appellations in Midnight here helps people to better communicate in daily life.The fourth part is to look at the social characteristics of the time through appellations.This part is based on the types of appellations and factors influencing usage contained in "Midnight" analyzed above,under the support of sociolinguistic theory,peek into the social characteristics of Chinese society in the 1930 s,especially in Shanghai,China in terms of culture,economy and politics.The fifth part is the conclusion.First,it summarizes the research content of this thesis,including: the appellation conditions contained in Midnight,related factors that affect the use of appellation in communicative activities,and the social characteristics of the 1930 s.After that,the effect of the research conclusion of this paper on daily communicative activities and related research in a specific social period is briefly described.Finally,the shortcomings of this paper are pointed out.
