This translation report is a summary of theoretical thinking and practice based on the translation project. The source text is derived from the introduction part as well as the first and the second section of chapter one from the academic work “Theory after theory” published in September 2010 by Routeledge. This work is a collection of essays on theory,co-edited by Derek Attridge and Jane Elliott, both professors at the University of York. This book outlines new topics, new fields and new directions of theoretical development, showing the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of current theories. This comprehensive academic work enriches and updates the existing cultural theory and provides new ideas for the study of post-cultural theory, which is of great significance and value.Through repeated reading and in-depth analysis of the source text, the translator found that Theory after Theory covers a large number of professional terms involving multiple realms, characterized with succinct and accurate language, rigorous and clear logic. The text is dominated by long and difficult sentences.Considering the academic, objective, theoretical qualities of the cultural theory work and the differences in the logical structure of Chinese and the Western language, when translating this work, the translator starts from the vocabulary and syntactic level, and employs Peter Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation theory to guide this translation practice.According to the characteristics of the two translation methods, the translator adopts amplification method, omission method, linear translation method, division method, restructuring method and other methods to translate, analyze and summarize the content of the article. It has been found through practice that semantic translation theory is applicable to retain the original syntactic form,to translate professional terms and proper nouns, while communicative translation theory is applicable to adjust the language framework with the purpose of respecting readers' cultural habits and enhancing their reading experience. This translation report aims to provide some references and ideas for academic translations, and further improve the translation quality of academic texts. This translation report is principally composed of five parts. The first part is the depiction of the translation task. The second part is the introduction to the translationprocess, including related matters done before, within and after translation. The third part is the theoretical basis, introducing the application of different translation techniques based upon Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theories. The fourth part is the focus of the report, which collates the translation of different words, the translating and processing of various sentence patterns in English, and conducts specific analysis in combination with typical cases. The last part is the conclusion, which summarizes the experience gained by the translator in the translation practice and her introspection on the deficiencies.
