Liaozhai zhiyi is a masterpiece in the history of Chinese classic novels.There are lively characters,vivid language and attractive plots in it,which not only makes it well known in China,but also helps it attract many foreign researchers around the world.Among those foreign versions,English versions are the most widely spread version,and have the greatest influences.Famous sinologists such as Samuel Wells Williams,Clement Frencis Romilly Allen,Herbert Allen Giles and Rose Quong have translated stories from Liaozhai,which contributes a lot to the “going out” of Chinese culture.Rose,one of the woman translators,has another identity as a performer.Her special identities make her translation have many significant characteristics.In the thesis,the author will mainly adopt literature research method and comparing research method.As for using literature research method,the author will collect,identify and review the literatures,then analyze them to solve the key problems.As for using comparing research method,the author will compare Rose Quong's translation of Liaozhai with other English versions of Liaozhai,to find out how her career,identity and life experience influence her translation.This paper can be divided into five chapters:Chapter one is the introduction to Liaozhai zhiyi,Rose Quong and her translation Chinese Ghost and Love Stories.This chapter is mainly about the writing background of Liaozhai,the life experiences of Rose and the translation background.Chapter two is Rose's womanhandling of Pu Songling's tales.This characteristic can be reflected in her preference for love stories,translation of titles,narration of eros,female narrative focus and rewriting of Pu Songling's comments.Chapter three is the influence on the translation from her career as a performer.This characteristic can be reflected in her rewriting of the plot,the characterization through dialogues,the tendency of popularization and the use of illustrations.Chapter four are the influences of Rose's dual identity on her translation of Liaozhai zhiyi,the spread and influence of Rose Quong's translation.This chapter is mainly about the collection,reception of the translation and its influence on the“going out” of Chinese culture.Chapter five are implications to the “going out” of Chinese culture.This chapter is mainly about good ideas that we can get from Rose's translation,difficulties of“going out”,the identity of the translator,selection of the original text,quality of translations and unified management from government.
