Analysis Of The Stories Of Immortal And Ghost Of Ji Yi Ji With Xue Yongruo

Ji Yi Ji of Xue Yongruo is an influential novel in the development history of TangDynasty’s novels and there are a large number of works which describe themes ofimmortal and ghost. At present, there are not many researches on Ji Yi Ji and they mostlyanalysed from the whole perspective or just explored some chapters. The paper haschosen stories of the themes of immortal and ghost to strive to carry out more thoroughexploration. On the basis of table of contents of Ji Yi Ji which were done textual researchby Li Jianguo, taking novels of themes of immortal and ghost as the research subject,through careful reading, this paper has made analysis from four parts which include thetypes of immortal and ghost stories, images of immortal and ghost, thought connotationand the influence of the concept of immortal and ghost of Tang people to the creation.The main body of this paper is divided into four chapters. The first chapter mainlyintroduces the types of immortal and ghost stories in Ji Yi Ji, which has been analyzedfrom two aspects of encounter of man-immortal, man-ghost and Taoist magical arts. Thesecond chapter has made analysis of the images of immortal and ghost created in thenovel on the basis of interpretation of the stories. In terms of immortal’s image, it hasbeen analyzed from three aspects as immortal’s dress, living environment and behaviortypes. In terms of the ghost’s image, it has been mainly analyzed from three aspects ofthe overall image, behavior types and image types. On the basis of the previous twochapters, the third chapter has made explorations of the thought connotations expressedby the stories of immortal and ghost in Ji Yi Ji and it is mainly performed from threeaspects as follow: illusion of the unreality-world, reflection of the realistic world and thethought of destiny and retribution expressed in the works. The forth part has madeinterpretation from the influences of concepts of immortal and ghost of Tang people tothe story creation of Ji Yi Ji. Through the researching and reading of the stories ofimmortal and ghost in Ji Yi Ji, we can find that although most of the stories are short andthe plots are simple, the author has created numerous the images of immortal and ghostin the simple and short stories. Moreover, the works has performed the social reality atthat time and the author’s own attitude and evaluation through the illusion and construction of the unreality-world.
