This article is a translation practice report written by the author after translating sections of chapter 9(21st century feminism)and 8(violence against women)of The Law of Sex Discrimination.The book,The Law of Sex Discrimination,which provides a profound analysis of gender discrimination against women from ancient times to modern society from the perspective of professional law,mainly includes the following aspects: "abortion rights," "same-sex marriage," "violence against women."There are two reasons that the author chose this book as the translation practice material.On the one hand,the author's supervisor has been engaged in the legal translation for many years,and she did a lot of researches in this field,so she can give the author practical guidance for translation;On the other hand,there is no complete translation version of this book in China at present,and some of the translation versions are from the author's previous senior schoolmates.Therefore,if the book was fully translated,it would provide some references for domestic scholars engaged in the study of gender discrimination against women.It is an legal text that makes the translation pretty difficult.Considering that there are large amounts of legal terminologies,complicated English sentences,and accurate legal English expressions,the author selects the famous modern Chinese translator Yan Fu's "faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance" theory in the translation of this text.The author,under the guidance of Yan Fu's translation theory,tried his best to use more authentic expressions to convey the basic meaning of the original text in order to make the translation version much more closely with the original text in terms of the words,sentence structures as well as writer's intention.This translation practice report makes the author deeply realized that in order to proficiently transform Chinese into English languages and in reverse,in the first place,it requires solid basic language skills and deep understanding of the characteristics of Chinese and English languages.In the second place,it is necessary to have a better comprehension for traits of the genre that the author is going to translate.Like an old Chinese saying goes:“Knowing your enemy and yourself,you can fight a hundred battles and win them all.”In conclusion,the author sincerely hopes that through this translation,more and more readers can further realize what terrible circumstances have women experienced all over the world,and then more actions could be taken by countries,societies as well as the legislature bodies to protect women and help them eventually break off the shackles of sex discrimination.
