The Production-oriented Approach(POA)is an innovative foreign language teaching theory with distinct Chinese characteristics,dedicated to overcoming the shortcoming of separation between learning and using in traditional foreign language teaching.After more than ten years' development,it's theoretical and practical research results are rich,and can provide much valuable experience for subsequent researchers.Taking four teaching hypotheses of POA as the theoretical basis,the author tried to apply POA teaching process to carry out high school English reading classroom teaching.Through a 16-week teaching experiment in a senior high school in Inner Mongolia,the author collected and analyzed quantitative research data,and drew research conclusions on this basis.This research belongs to the experimental research in the field of social science.The research hypotheses are as follows:(1)Compared with traditional reading teaching mode,POA can effectively improve the students' reading comprehension ability.(2)Applying POA teaching process is helpful to improving students' English reading motivation.The experiment began on September 9,2019 and ended on January 6,2020.lasted from September 2019 to January 2020.The research objects are Class 284 and Class 286,two parallel classes of Grade one in a senior high school in Inner Mongolia,among which Class 284 with 30 students was the experimental group and Class 286 with 33 students was the controlled group.The teacher used POA teaching process to teach reading in the experimental class,while the controlled group adopted the traditional teaching method.Before and after the experiment,all the research objects were given two reading comprehension tests,and the students of experimental group were investigated by questionnaire on their English reading motivation.Based on the data obtained from SPSS 23.0 statistical analysis,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Compared with the traditional teaching method,POA teaching has prominent advantage in improving students' reading ability.(2)After 16 weeks of teaching experiments,students' English reading motivation in experimental class has changed significantly.This study has obtained the following research enlightenments:(1)The teacher should regard the language materials in textbooks as an important medium and find the best combination of input and output to carry out reading teaching activities.(2)Teachers should constantly adjust their teaching strategies in order to meet different needs of the students.In this study the applicability of the POA is extended to senior high school students.The research conclusions obtained in this study have preliminarily verified its effectiveness and feasibility in reading teaching.What's more,the author is committed to exploring the ideas and methods of applying POA in reading teaching,transforming the abstract teaching process into the concrete and operational teaching steps,which form a relatively stable,fresh and efficient reading classroom teaching mode.The results of this research can be directly applied to carry out classroom teaching by front-line senior high school English teachers in China.
