The General High School English Curriculum Standard(2017)emphasizes that students' life experience should be used as a reference for the choice of reading materials to make students apply what they have learned.Meanwhile,it also puts stress on arousing students' learning interest,and developing students' learning strategies,thinking ability as well as English core literacy through reading practice.However,nowadays,some English reading teaching practice in senior high schools still focuses on text translation and imparting grammar knowledge,which causes the teaching content to be fragmented and formalizes the cultivation of students' thinking.As a result,such teaching method neglects the combination of students' learning and using of English language.Based on the above-mentioned phenomena of English teaching,Professor Wen Qiufang and her team(2015)proposed Production-oriented Approach(POA),which tends to solve the problem of separation between language learning and language use and improve students' comprehensive language skills.Ms.Y in X High School,Neijiang,Sichuan has brought POA into her English reading class.Thus,based on the related theories of POA,this study takes X High School as the object of investigation,trying to explore the following questions:1)What is the current situation of English reading teaching in X High School?2)What effects does reading teaching mode based on POA have on students in terms of reading strategies and reading grades?3)What is the students' feedback on using POA in reading teaching?This study chooses the two senior one classes with the same level of reading comprehension from X High School as the objects of comparison in the experiment.The experimental class applies POA to English reading teaching,while the control class adopts the traditional English reading teaching method.At the same time,both of the qualitative and the quantitative research methods are applied to this study.The classroom observation is used to learn about the status quo of English reading teaching in X High School.The pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire are carried out to learn about the changes of students in using the reading strategies after being exposed to the English reading class based on POA.The pre-test and post-test are adopted to make sure whether students' reading grades are improved or not after attending the English reading class based on POA.The interview of the six students from the experimental class tends to find out their feedback on applying POA to English reading teaching in the experimental class.The major findings are concluded as follows: firstly,the traditional teaching methods are still adopted by most English teachers in English reading teaching in X High School.Secondly,POA is proved to be useful in improving students' reading strategies and increasing students' reading grades.Finally,students have given positive feedback towards POA,because they think POA could not only help them build up their confidence in learning English but also cultivate their English core literacy.Based on such results,the thesis provides some useful and feasible suggestions for English reading teaching and learning in senior high schools.
