Reading teaching is an important way for junior high school students to obtain reading skills,learn knowledge and get information.However,there are some problems have to be dealt with,such as dull classroom atmosphere,lower interest on English reading and lower reading scores.So,it becomes an issue that how to help students understand context and different cultures and how to improve students' comprehensive language proficiency.In 1990 s,Multimodal theory was widely discussed.Western scholars thought when people communicated with others,they not only used language but also image,music,act,etc.With the further research,researchers employed the theory with English teaching.And it was available that the Multimodal theory applied to English teaching to improve students' language competence.Based on Multimodal Theory,Krashen's Input Theory and Constructivism,this study employs multimodal theory to English reading teaching.In order to verify the effects on students' reading scores and attitude,the author carries out teaching experiment.The subjects are 80 second-grade students from two classes in a junior high school.This study is intended to test two hypotheses:(1)the application of multimodal theory to English reading teaching can improve junior high school students' reading comprehension score.(2)this kind of reading teaching can improve junior high school students' attitude.The experimental class adopts multimodal theory reading teaching and the control class adopts traditional reading teaching.Reading tests carry out before and after teaching experiment.Two questionnaire surveys and an interview has been conducted to know whether students' attitude of English reading changed.The author analyzes data with SPSS 23.0.It is found that the result of the experimental class changed significantly different with control class(P=0.00).The questionnaire survey results show that the attitude of experimental class is aroused from cognitive dimension(P=0.00),emotional dimension(P=0.00)and behavior dimension(P=0.00).In conclusion,the application of multimodal theory to English reading teaching can help junior high school students improve their reading and arouse reading attitude.And students have a positive attitude towards this kind of teaching.In addition,teacher should pay attention to the difficulty of activities to satisfy different level of students.
