The Confucius Institute at Alfred University was established in December 2008,in cooperation with Confucius Institute Headquarters(Hanban),Alfred University and China University of Geosciences(Wuhan),whose main function is to be engaged in Chinese-teaching and culture transmission in university community and giving people more particular knowledge of China.For more than ten years after the establishment of the Confucius Institute at Alfred University,we have devoted ourselves to Chinese-teaching and culture promotion and satisfying the needs of people’s desire to know China.Soon the Confucius Institute at Alfred University became a large scaled Chinese-teaching and culture promotion center of New York in the east of America.In 2014,the dean—professor Wilfred Huang was awarded the honor of "Outstanding Individual of Global Confucius Institute ",and in 2015,the Confucius Institute at Alfred University was awarded the honor of "Advanced Collective of Global Confucius Institute".This paper takes the Confucius institute at Alfred University as the research object,and sorts out the changes and development of the institute happened in the past ten years,as well as the experience we have accumulated.In addition,through questionnaires which were sent to teachers in this institute and interviews which were done of the dean,the students,theirparents and the residents of the community nearby,the author has made a general research of Chinese-teaching,teacher training development and cultural promotion activities in the Confucius institute at Alfred University.In this process,the author found there were still problems in some aspects such as Chinese-teaching,culture promotion and management of the institute,meanwhile,the author tries to put forward his own suggestions,hoping to make contribution to the further development of the Confucius institute at Alfred University.The article includes four parts.The introduction,the first part,the second part,the third part,the fourth part and the conclusion.The introduction shows the reason why this topic is chosen,the research significance and the research methods of this topic,and summarizes the research status of the topic.The first part shows the overview of the Confucius Institute of Alfred University.The second part shows the result of a survey on the learners in the three school districts of the Confucius Institute of Alfred University,including the number of the learners,their learning motivation,and the learning effect,etc.through questionnaires,interviews and classroom observation.The teaching part includes the teaching language,the teaching method,and the classroom management,etc.About the teachers,this part shows some of their basic information,like their age,gender ratio,specialty,education background,teaching ability,and the transition between the new and old teachers.About the teaching materials,this part shows the selection and use ofthe teaching materials,the self-designed teaching materials of this Confucius Institute,etc.The third part shows the existing problems.Teaching problems:the subject teaching is not systematic,the teaching methods are not good enough for teaching,English is used too much,the classroom management is poor,etc.The problems about the teachers: they cannot manage the class so well with another language,their poor intercultural communication ability,they’re not good enough at using modern technology in teaching,their lack of talent in Chinese culture,their poor classroom management ability,and the transition between the new and old teachers doesn’t go so smoothly.About the teaching materials: they don’t have enough fixed and practical teaching materials,they don’t show enough innovation in self-designed teaching materials,the poor awareness of the 5C method,etc.The fourth part shows some suggestions.In terms of teaching,the thematic teaching should be more systematic,the teaching methods should serve the teaching content better,the awareness of classroom management should be strengthened,the ability of classroom management should be improved,the teaching language should be used more properly,and the proportion of the Chinese and English language used in class should be improved.In terms of teachers’ training,the selection system should be improved,the pertinence of pre post training should be highlighted,the post training should also be paid more attention to,and the overall quality of all the teachers should be enhanced.In terms of the self-designed teaching materials,more suitable,operational and practicalteaching materials are needed for each school district.The conclusion summarizes the Chinese language teaching work in the Confucius Institute of Alfred University and the shortcomings of this paper are also pointed out in this part.
