Based on the questionnaire survey of all undergraduate students of the Confucius Institute at Addis Ababa University from 2016 to 2018,with statistical analysis,questionnaire survey,interview,observation and diary introspection methods,this thesis summarizes the existing problems and then puts forward practical and feasible improvement strategies according to the current Chinese language teaching situation there.As shown in the thesis,from the teacher’s aspect,there are four problems: lack of teachers,less professionalism of the teaching group,loss of volunteer teachers and less attention to the sustainable development on this vocation.The learners have improper attitudes,low motivation towards studying and difficulty in learning the Chinese language.Unreasonable curriculum settings,unacceptable teaching materials and extreme deficiency in teaching resources are top three disadvantages in the courses and teaching resources.Problems in teaching methods and activities include insufficient preparation for teaching,inadequate attention to "teacher’s language",monotonous class activities,unscientific teaching methods,over-utilitarian homework,less related and less active cultural activities,great cultural gap and inadequate internship system.Based on the summary of the above issues,suggestions for sustainable development are put forward: appropriately extending the service life of volunteer teachers from China,strengthening teachers’ training,and promoting the localization of the teaching team to optimize the teaching group.To solve the learners’ problems,it is important to understand their motivation to mobilize their enthusiasm in Chinese learning.Moreover,in terms of curricula and teaching resources,the Confucius Institute at AAU needs to optimize its curriculum designs as well as textbooks and increase capital investment.In view of the problems in teaching methods and activities,it is necessary to strengthen the supervision on teachers’ work,clarify the purpose of teaching,integrate teaching methods,design and innovate class activities.Cooperation with Chinese enterprises in Ethiopia which can expand cultural influence and tighten their friendship is a considerable way to solve the cultural problems.In the end,the thesis put forward some suggestions for a better construction and sustainable development of the Confucius Institutes in Ethiopia,which would also be useful to other Confucius Institutes in Africa.
