A Study On Adjective Reduplication In Gongyi Dialect

As a kind of universal grammatical means capable of illustrating the internal mechanisms of language,adjective reduplication has attracted many Chinese linguists'attention since the 1980s.Though Gongyi dialect is one branch of Middle Mandarin,it has some distinctive features.Therefore,this thesis aims to analyze the adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect.Studies on adjective reduplication are quite abundant in both Mandarin and dialects.Most of them are concentrated on identifying the forms and demonstrating the grammatical functions and semantic features of reduplicated adjectives.However,the reduplicating conditions of a certain kind of adjective reduplication are rarely mentioned.Compared with those in Mandarin and other dialects,adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect has some particular characteristics.Although in a large number,they are not reduplicated randomly and some regularities exist in their reduplicating conditions.However,adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect hasn't been paid attention to.Therefore,this thesis mainly studies the three questions in the following.?1?What are the features of forms of adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect??2?What are the grammatical features exhibited by each kind of adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect??3?What are the reduplicating conditions and semantic features of a certain form of adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect?Through referring to relevant former studies and analyzing the language data collected,answers to above questions are showed as follows:?1?Adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect can be divided into three kinds—full reduplication including AA and AABB,partial reduplication including ABB and BAA,and reduplication involving other morphological means including AXX,AXA,As?⁴²Axuo⁴²,k?²⁴XX and Ali⁰AB.?2?All adjective reduplication can function as attributive,complement,predicate and adverbial.Different from Mandarin,the main grammatical functions of adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect are predicate and adverbial.?3?Even though for most adjective reduplication,there's no absolute unified standard for its reduplicating conditions,their bases are found to have some common features.And the semantic features of adjective reduplication in Gongyi dialect are recognized as entailing degree and containing subjective evaluation.The quantity of degree and the emotional coloring of the subjective evaluation differ from different kinds of reduplication.
