Wang Zhaoyun lived in Jiajing and Wanli periods of Ming Dynasty, who failed the imperial examinations and was known as commoner in literature.Among the fictions compiled by him, there are ten volumes of Jing Zuo Xin Shu,ten volumes of Xin Ke Wang Shi Qing Xiang Yu,and two volumes of Wu Yi Jia Hua Hou Ji.In addition, there is no way to know the original appearance of Wu Yi Jia Hua.In terms of content selection,Wang Zhaoyun's fictions are based on the criteria of “searching for strange things and hunting for differences”,“clearing Confucian classics and filling in the historical gaps”,“increasing knowledge and expanding horizons”,“abbreviating the words and lasting appeal”,and so on.Its writing style features mainly include:the dynastic and regional characteristics of the selection range,as well as the poetic and prose style of writing. The books written by Wang Zhaoyun are derived from each other, from which we can see his understanding of the difference between fiction and historical biography.Wang Zhaoyun's fictions show their own characteristics in subject orientation and have the unique thought connotation, which can be roughly divided into:the expression of personal sentiment, the promotion and suppression of Confucianism and Buddhism, the description of social conditions and human feelings, and the exaggeration of natural knowledge. In the aspect of narrative art,Wang Zhaoyun's ficitons mainly embody:the bizarre and capricious design of plots, the historical writing method combining with narration and discussion, and the appropriate language style.Although Wang Zhaoyun's fictions are mostly records of what he saw and experienced when he traveled around the world, they also collect works from previous generations. His fictions provided a lot of materials for later works, and many stories became the blueprint for later fictions. At the same time,Wang Zhaoyun's concept of fictions is generally consistent with the catalog decription and series collection, which also has positive significance to strengthen the stylistic features of fictions.
