Wang Xiang-Jin(1561-1653)also calls Jin-chen or Zi-jin.His Hao is Ming Nong Yin Shi or Hao Sheng Ju Shi.Coming from Xin Cheng(modern Huan Tai)in Shandong Province.Xiang-Jin is an important figure of the Xin Cheng Wang family.Xiang-Jin is known as a notable academic,having published on a many diverse topics ranging from agriculture,medicine,literature,Buddhism to local anthropology.While he published on many topics,his widest reaching volumes typically focused on the fields of agriculture and medicine.The following thesis will analyze his life and friendships,his surviving and lost volumes of work,as well as his fulcrum-like influence upon the fortunes of his family.Xiang-Jin is a key historical witness to the stagn ation of Wang family.He worked hard for Imperial Examination when he was young.After a checkered start as an imperial official,he later returned and was appointed the high official in his elder years.Upon returning to his family,he experienced collate ral tragedy amidst the warring Ming and Qing,further fueling his life experience.He paid more attention on education,which ma de him restore his family finally.Xiang-Jin has lots friends.Presiding over Jiang-Nan prefecture,his civil nature and disrega rd for others' status,earned him the respect of the local literati,like Chen Ji-Ru and Mao Jin.He cultivated many additional contacts amongst these friends,expanding his network beyond officials and his counterparts.We can see his deep love for literature from this.Even though Xiang-Jin is a devout prolific writer,much of his work,about 20 books,were destroyed during the Qing ascension,with merely 16 books remaining.It includes Er Ru Ting Qun Fang Pu,San Bu Jian Bian Yan Fang and so on.The practical nature of his tomes on agriculture and medicine was distilled both from his reading habits and life experiences.In addition to his more famous academic writings,Xiang-Jin works also extended into the realms of poetic prose and literature.Being a prolific writer,Xiang-Jin's literary works covered a wide expanse of topics,yet due to the tumultuous Qing ascension not many survived to be compiled into Ci Xian Tang Ji.His poetic writings drawing upon his rich experiences to describe multiple topics,like landscape and garden,which express the emotion of concerning about the country as well as homesickness.His essay s have many topics too,like Fu,Zan,Zhuwen,Shu,Qi,Xu,Ba,Zengxu,Ji,Zhuan,Shuo and so on,which provide us a lot of historical va lues.The Wang family of Xin Cheng bore local notability within Shandong for numerous decades,yet with the violent Qing ascension,the family encountered great turmoil.It was into this that Xiang-Jin inherited the mantle of patriarch.Leading a revived emphasis on education and a strengthening of family bonds,Xiang-Jin laid the foundations for the family's fortunes as a whole.It is in the understanding of his exertions that we can also further understand the turmoil 's facing many revered families during the Qing transition.
