A Study On Interpreting Strategies Of Idioms From The Perspective Of The Skopos Theory

Idioms make frequent appearance in speeches to make them more effective and impressive on formal occasions.Idioms have various forms,profound meanings and unique structures;it is difficult for interpreters to interpret in the actual interpreting.Interpreting has a striking feature,which is timeliness.Meanwhile,idioms are difficult to be interpreted in a short period.This thesis analyzes idioms interpreting from the perspective of the Skopos Theory.The Skopos Theory emphasizes that interpreting is not only a language conversion,but a kind of cross-cultural interaction,which has its special targets.Except for languages,interpreters should take various cultural and social elements into consideration.Interpreters should adopt appropriate methods to make interpreting loyal to the meaning of the source texts so as to meet the expectations of source-language speakers and realize the communicative purposes.This thesis is a research on idioms interpreting.Under the guidance of the Skopos Theory and its three principles,this thesis investigates the characteristics of idioms interpreting and summarize some strategies to cope with the idioms interpreting.In this thesis,the interpreting of eight types of idioms are analyzed from the perspectives of literal translation and free translation.With these two strategies,the interpreting cases from Chinese leaders' speeches are analyzed under the skopos rule,the coherence rule and the fidelity rule.First,literal translation is mainly employed to handle the interpreting of hot words and proverbs under the guidance of the fidelity rule.Second,free translation is mainly employed to tackle the interpreting of mottoes,idiomatic phrases and eight-character idioms under the guidance of the coherence rule.Finally,free translation is mainly employed to cope with the interpreting of four-character idioms,poetry and classical styles of writing under the guidance of the skopos rule.By analyzing examples from the perspectives of literal translation and free translation,this thesis draws a conclusion that the Skopos Theory and its three rules have strong practicability and feasibility to cope with idioms interpreting.Hopefully,this thesis can provide reference to idioms interpreting.
