A Study On Interpreting Strategies Of The Foreign Affairs Interpretation From The Skopos Theory Perspective

According to the Skopos Theory,translation is not a mere literal conversion,but a kind of cross-cultural interaction which has its targets.In addition to languages,translators and interpreters should take various social and cultural elements into consideration.Translators and interpreters are allowed to adopt appropriate methods flexibly in the translation and interpretation practices while keeping loyal to the meaning of source-language texts to truly realize the communicative purpose and meet the expectation of source-language writers or speakers.In recent years,Chinese premiers'remarks at the press conference during the "Two Sessions" have drawn attention of translators and interpreters.Given that premiers' remarks are of great political significance and contain numerous expressions with Chinese characteristics,choosing appropriate theories and techniques is highly necessary for translators and interpreters.This thesis takes Premier Li's press conference in 2018 as an example and the Skopos Theory as the theoretical guidance to study how to demonstrate the real expectation and the communicative purpose of speakers and what kind of techniques interpreters may adopt at the conference.The thesis is divided into five parts,which are introduction,literature review,introduction of the Skopos Theory,case study and conclusion.The first part introduces background and significance of the research,issues and methods as well as structure of the thesis;the second part introduces current studies on the translation of premiers' remarks at the press conference and the Skopos Theory;the third part is a detailed introduction of the Skopos Theory and its guidance for the interpretation for political discourses;the fourth part is the case study and introduces four interpreting strategies adopted which are addition,omission,conversion and reorganization and the last part makes a conclusion.Based on analyses,the thesis thinks the Skopos Theory and the four strategies summarized are highly applicable for foreign affairs interpretation to effectively realize communicative purposes.
