A Report On Interpreting For The Seminar Of Shandong Province Employment Service System Under The Guidance Of The Skopos Theory

Along with the proposal and implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative,exchanges between China and other countries have become more frequent,and the number of China-assisted projects has also increased.In this circumstance,interpreting has become an essential tool for the communication between our country and other countries.Consecutive interpreting,as a major category of interpretation activities,frequently appears in seminars,meetings,banquets,and other occasions.On formal occasions like China-assisted projects,the language of the spokesperson needs to be rigorous and understandable,which requires interpreters to have high professional skills,psychological stability,and political sensitivity.This report is based on the author’s interpretation practice.The author participated in the Seminar of Shandong Province Employment Service System,serving as an interpreter in the project,in which the main form of the interpretation is consecutive interpreting.The author recorded the entire interpretation process and transcribed the recording materials for the analysis.The record and the transcribed text are taken as the corpus for the analysis in this report.After the interpretation practice,analysis was made under the guidance of the three rules of the Skopos Theory(skopos rule,coherence rule,and fidelity rule).Guided by the Skopos Theory,the author retranslated some examples in revised versions.By comparing two versions of translation,the author attempts to explore some practical strategies in consecutive interpreting from the dimensions of the lexical,syntactic,and discourse level.Besides,the author also analyzes some examples in the interpreting practice without the revised version.In this report,the author strives to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the examples in the transcription,and select representative cases to summarize some interpreting strategies including omission,substitution,adaption,literal translation,liberal translation,and so on,which are often used in the interpreting process.The author hopes that this report can provide some reference for the interpreting practice in China-assisted projects in the future.Some effective strategies and advice are provided to further improve the author’s interpreting skills.In the interpreting practice in the future,interpreters should pay more attention to the purpose of the task when choosing interpreting strategies.
