China and the United States,as two of the world's most powerful economies,are competitors but need each other.They have a significant and dominant impact on the world situation.As China and the United States trade more frequently,both countries need to have a deeper understanding of the economy on the other side of the Pacific Ocean,whether it is because they share common interests or have different demands.The translation of such economic reports undoubtedly serves as a bridge for the people of the two countries and deserves more attention.The author chose Chapter Three and Chapter Four(part)of An Economic Report to the Governor of the State of Tennessee 2019 as the source text for this translation report,which focuses on the outlook for Tennessee's economy.This economic report is an informational text that is detailed,accurate,concise and official.Therefore,based on the translation shift theory of John Cunnison Catford who is a famous English translation theorist,the author translated and analyzed the report.Translation shift theory holds that formal equivalence should be abandoned in translation,while equivalence on meaning should be emphasized,which provides guidance for translators from a new perspective.This translation report is divided into four chapters.Chapter One introduces the background and characteristics of the translation task.Chapter Two describes the whole translation process,including the pre-translation preparation,the situation during the translation process and the post-translation revision.Chapter Three is the main part of this translation report.Under the guidance of Catford's translation shift theory,the author analyzes the translation cases of words,sentences and grammar from two aspects: level shift and category shift.At the same time,the author analyzes the original text and finds that there are some words with cultural background in this economic report.Therefore,the author makes a supplement in this part.In Chapter Four,the author summarizes the problems and deficiencies encountered in this translation practice,and gives a perspective on translation work in the future.The author hopes that this translation practice can not only test and improve her translation ability,but also provide a certain reference for similar translation activities and make a contribution to the translation of economic texts.
