As the impact of globalization deepens, all countries in the world are getting closer. However, the Time-Space Compression allows distance and time to be extended or shortened arbitrarily, resulting in the weakening of the influence of space and the identity of place crisis.Nationalism and localism also make voices and react in local areas. In the early 1990 s,British human geographer Doreen Massey began to think about the role of place and the sense of place, and she proposed a global sense of place theory based on relational space."Global sense of place",also known as "Progressive sense of place",clarifies the view that in the era of globalization, places are affected but not conquered in connection with the external places.Through the discussion of the relationship between space and local,Massey insisted on looking at globalization from the perspective of space, and reflected on the limitations of prevailing localism and nationalism at that time, pointing out that the global and the local are no longer opposed to each other but are mutually complement and interdependent. The main body of the thesis is divided into three parts:The first part analyzes the historical background of Massey's global sense of place theory. The "cultural turn" that has emerged in the geography community has set off a wave of place research, and the rapid penetration of neoliberal globalization has caused reactionary resistance in the local area.Under this background,Massey began to think about the active role and significance of the place under the globalization trend. At the same time,Massey's theory of global sense of place was influenced by Henry Lefebvre's "The production of space",David Harvey's "Time-Space compression" and Western scholars' research on "place".The second part sorts out the basic contents of Doreen Massey's global sense of place theory.Based on the investigation of the main documents written by Doreen Massey,it focuses on combing and analyzing the documents since the 1990 s.Through the interpretation of space and local, globalization and sense of place, global sense of place and other related contents and their connections,it advocates a global perspective on globalization and insists on the role of globalization in reshaping the sense of place. In the main content of the global sense of place theory,we discuss the three dimensions of "Power Geometry based onTime-Space compression","criticism of Heidegger's conservative view of place","Urban space and identity of place".The third part evaluates Massey's global sense of place theory objectively in combination with specific reality, mainly from its theoretical contributions and limitations.Massey 's theory of global sense of place developed Marxist dialectics, reasonably discussed the relationship between the global and the local, analyzed the complex power relations within the space, and advocated a variety of positive identity of place. At the same time, the idea of progressive sense of place advocated by the global sense of place theory sometimes does not help people to gain a positive identity of place. From a practical perspective, there is inevitable a utopian tendency. The above has explained Doreen Massey's global sense of place theory in three parts:background, content and evaluation.Massey's global sense of place theory advocates a positive connection between the global and the local, and connects space and social relations in concrete practice.Facing the trend of homogenization, complexity, and inequality in the global urban space,as well as the tendency of the loss of "sense of place " in modern society,it is necessary to re-examine "The idea of building a progressive sense of place in the process of connecting with the world" proposed by Doreen Massey. For China's opening-up and urbanization construction, the theory of global sense of place is bound to have positive significance.
