| This is a project report on the translation of the first and second chapters selected from the Nobel Prize Women in Science: Their Lives,Struggles,and Momentous Discoveries(hereafter referred to as Nobel Prize Women in Science),written by Sharon Bertsch McGrayne,an American writer and a journalist.In the first chapter,the writer described how Mary Curie,a Polish physicist and her husband,Pierre Curie found radioactive elements,and displayed Mary Curie's life as a female scientist;in the second chapter,the writer presented the lifelong career in science of Lise Meitner who was a German physicist.The greatness of the two distinguished women changed the traditional view on women and promoted the development of social ideology.In light of that,this translation has its due significance in real life.The translator chose this book to be rendered because she wanted to demonstrate a positive image of females and change the conventional idea that woman was inferior in scientific studies.With the guidance of Catford's theory of translation shift,the translator discussed the problems that she had encountered during the translation.For example,how to translate the names of some scientists,how to achieve different kinds of shifts flexibly and how to reproduce the style of original text.Meanwhile,the translator discussed the lessons that she had learned from this project.The translator realized that the disadvantages of herself in some professional knowledge and further improvement was necessary.Specifically,the emotion of main characters couldn't be fully revealed unless the translator shared the similar feelings with the main characters.Besides,the translator realized that her poor expression in Chinese was a problem to be solved in the future.The translator knew that Roman was not built in a day and an excellent translator must commit herself/himself to translation via persistent study and practice. |
