Based on an English-Chinese translation text, this translation project report narrates the challenges and problems faced by the author in the process of translation. The source text for this translation practice is excerpted from the book Nobel Prize Women in Science: Their Lives,Struggles, and Momentous Discoveries: Second Edition written by Sharon Bertsch McGrayne,a contemporary American writer. It includes the seventh and the eighth chapters of the book which narrate the lives, struggles and momentary discoveries of the two women scientists Barbara McClintock,an American geneticist and Maria Goeppert Mayer,a GermanAmerican physicist. In this translation practice,Peter Newmark's Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation Theory is selected as the guiding principle to the deal with the main three difficulties in translation including the lexicons, sentences and rhetoric devices adopted in the original text.Under the guidance of Semantic Translation, the author focuses on the exact contextual meaning of the original and conveying the message and culture of the original in a form that conforms to the linguistic, cultural and pragmatic conventions of the target language.Under the guidance of the Communicative Translation, the author centers around the comprehension and response of the target language receptor and tries to make the sentence understandable and brings the external cultural elements to the target language by exploring the practical meaning of the exact words, splitting the sentences and altering the sentence order. As the original text of the translation project is the biography of two great female scientists, this translation practice is likely to help Chinese readers better understand the lives and careers of female scientists and arouse more people's interest in scientific research.
