V.G.Rasputin is a famous contemporary Russian writer and an outstanding representative writer of rural literature. He kept on writing about the countryside for almost fifty years. In the 20 th century, the rapid development of modern industrialization and urbanization transformed Russia from a traditional agricultural country into an advanced industrial country.Meanwhile, the countryside fell into decay under the impact of modern civilization. In the wake of the conflicts and collisions between traditional rural civilization and modern urban civilization, the rural people's psychological states and life choices became diversified: some people chose to protect rural traditions, some tried to escape from the countryside, some broke connections with their homeland after entering the city, and some struggled to survive in predicaments. As a writer assuming a strong sense of social responsibility,Rasputin perceives the impact of social changes on the countryside and realistically presents rural life, portraying rural characters that reflect the zeitgeist of that era.The thesis takes the rural characters in Rasputin's novels as the research object and studies these characters in the context of urban-rural conflicts, using methods such as textual close reading and empirical research. It discusses the living and spiritual conditions of different characters during social reforms, analyzes the techniques of characterization, and also explores their practical significance. The thesis is the first to provide an overall study of the rural characters in Rasputin's novels. It interprets the process of presentation of these characters from different aspects, which enriches the connotation of Rasputin's literary creation and shows his unique creative charms. The thesis is composed of an introduction, three chapters, and a conclusion. The introduction introduces the background, purpose, and significance of the research.Italso includes a literature review regarding the research on Rasputin's works.Besides,it introduces the structure, research methods, and innovations of the thesis. As for the main body of the thesis, chapter one introduces Rasputin's personal experience and literary creation and explores the background of his creation of the rural novels.Chapter two categorizes the rural characters in Rasputin's novels and studies the guardians of the countryside, the betrayers of the countryside, and the people struggling to survive in difficult situations,so as to reveal their common and personal characteristics in the context of urban-rural conflicts.Chapter three discusses Rasputin's unique artistic techniques of characterization from three aspects: daily narration, language description, and psychological description. The conclusion mainly analyzes the social significance of these characters and the reference value for Chinese urbanization construction.Because of Rasputin's deep exploration of the spiritual world of the rural characters and his distinctive writing, these characters with unique charms became representatives of rural characters in contemporary Russian literature. These characters reflect the writer's aesthetic orientation and life beliefs: when the countryside was in trouble, the writer paid attention to the fate of the rural individuals, reflected on modern civilization, and regarded the countryside as the spiritual home.He tried to acquire strength from the countryside and hoped to ease the pain of the society in the transition period by returning to the countryside.
