Study Of Han Yu-shan's Historiography

As a Chinese-American sinologist of the 20 th century,Han Yu-shan has studied in many fields and has achieved certain achievements in pedagogy,philosophy,and history.He is a very knowledgeable scholar.Han received his Ph.D.from Boston University in 1929,then returned to China in the 1930 s and taught at Shanghai's St.John's University.During in Shanghai,he published many articles on religious education and adult education in some special education journals in China.At the same time,he also held certain positions in some educational organizations and participates in some social even international activities.He returned to the United States in the 1940 s again and settled in the United States for a long time.During the period,Han Yu-shan wrote a number of historical review articles on the Pacific History Review,covering various aspects such as politics,economics,culture,and the communication between Chinese and foreign and also some other contents of ancient and modern China.The reading and analysis of these book reviews is also a comprehensive study of Han Yu-shan's historiography.In terms of historiography,the writing of Elements of Chinese Historiography has the most profound influence on future generations,which is the second book of the Chinese Sinology on the history of Chinese history after the Chinese Traditional Historiography of Charles Sidney Gardner.In many aspects,the theoretical issues of Chinese historiography are discussed in this book.Both the content and the historical views have a significant improvement compared to the former,such as the narrative about the role and status of historians,and the geographical categories and also the description of the work and the viewpoint of historical criticism in the development of Chinese historiography.And this work has not been translated and published in Chinese in China.This article is made up of three parts: Han Yu-shan's life story,the study of Elements of Chinese Historiography and the historical book reviews.When writing the study of Elements of Chinese Historiography,I expound and explain from four aspects: its writing background,historical thoughts,historical compilation and historical discourse.The systematic review of Han Yu-shan's personal life story and the discussion and analysis of his academic achievements,especially the Elements of Chinese Historiography,are of great significance to our comprehensive understanding of his life and the Chinese historiography in the American Sinology in the mid-20 th century,maybe also can provide some references for the Domestic historical studies.
