A Practice Report On The E-C Translation Of Love And Other Words(an Excerpt)from The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The source text of the report is selected from Love and Other Words,a novel by American writer Christina Lauren.The translation of novels belongs to the category of literary translation.The target text should convey the original text's meaning and reflect its style as much as possible,so that the target-text readers can feel the same as the original-text readers.This is precisely in line with Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory.Therefore,the author translated the preface and the first seven chapters under the guidance of his theory.The novel is subtle in expression and detailed in description.Some difficulties in translation are collected in the report,mainly including words with cultural connotation and contextual meaning,complex and long sentences and dialogues.The author,from the perspective of functional equivalence theory,analyzes several sampled Chinese translations at lexical,sentence and discourse levels and attempts to explore proper strategies to produce appropriate and natural translations with idiomatic Chinese expressions,provide good reading experience to the target-text readers as well as achieve functional equivalence.At the lexical level,four-character structure is used and annotations are added to words with cultural characteristics;at the sentence level,the strategies of synthetization and division are applied as appropriate;at the discourse level,attention is paid to the simulation of characters' tones and the relationship between them.Based on Nida's functional equivalence theory,the author,by analyzing and evaluating the translation,explores the application of his theory in literary translation and provides some translation strategies,hoping to support the translation and translation study of similar texts.
