Canadian literature has undergone a tremendous journey in 20th century.David Staines's Beyond the Provinces,Literary Canada at Century End introduces the history and development of Canadian literature in that period, from being pervaded by colonial mentality to finally defining itself. This thesis,as a record of the translation practice, takes chapters from the book as source text and adopts Nida's functional equivalence theory as guidance, attempting to explore the practical significance of the theory and to provide translation strategies for academic translation. The thesis first gives a brief introduction to the background information of the practice. Then it elaborates the features of and principles for functional equivalence theory, which is regarded as the theoretical framework. In the next part, the thesis describes the process of the translation practice, including pre-translation preparation, difficulties and post-translation evaluation. As the most important part of the thesis,a detailed analysis of representative cases is conducted in terms of lexical, syntactic and textual equivalence. In lexical level, the thesis analyzes the translation of proper nouns and words in context. In syntactic level, static structures, passive voice and impersonal sentences have strategic translation means to approach functional equivalence. In textual level, specific emphasis should be laid on the comprehensive utilization of translation method and the representation of original artistic style. As for summary, the author concludes some translation strategies and hopes the thesis can serve as guidance for translation in similar situations.
