Psycholinguists hold the view that the psychological process of listening comprehension begins with a series of continuous speech recognition.Only when students listen and understand the content can they build the confidence of language learning.How to improve learners' listening has been the cornerstone of developing communicative competence of learners.Listening also plays an important part in the teaching of students' five language competences.However,in actual situations,specific teaching for English listening has been ignored in Chinese senior high school due to the intense class hours and heavy teaching tasks.Few teachers spend time taking special listening teaching and training,and therefore,how to design the curriculums scientifically and apply listening training effectively to teaching so as to improve students' listening has become increasingly urgent.Starting from the above points,in reference to cognitive psychology theory and interpreting studies as well as its results,this paper aims to apply shadowing exercise training to listening teaching in senior high school through the experiment to probe into: 1)compared with the traditional teaching method,what the effect of shadowing exercise training in English listening teaching for senior high school students is;2)if there is an more obviously positive effect then,how to apply it to the actual school teaching.Through this empirical study,the author hopes to make up for the research vacancy and to provide a reference for the future studies about how to improve English listening for senior high school students.The experimental research is used in this study,for which the author chooses two classes randomly,with one as the experimental class,and the other the controlled class.As is planned,the whole span of experiment time is only three months,of which the first month is the period for pretest observation,the second month is the period for specific experiment and the third month is the delayed-observation period.There are two classes,whose 96 students participate in this experiment.After the experiment,24 students are randomly selected from each class for comparative analysis and it is found that all experimental data have statistical significance.This empirical study has demonstrated and proved that shadowing exercise training still has a positive effect on English listening in senior high school and can promote English listening better than the traditional teaching.Moreover,it is feasible to take advantage of the second-time listening to conduct shadowing training during listening exercise.Another way is to make use of the early morning reading class to offer listening material for shadowing training.Under the limitation of the school timetable,the key of conducting shadowing exercise is to make the most of the non-class hours according to the actual conditions.It is worth noting that the application of shadowing exercise in senior high school English listening training is still in urgent need to be paid more attention to by teachers and researchers.Besides,there are still some limitations and deviations in this study,such as the insufficiency of study samples,the lack of experimental duration,the singleness of measurement and so on.Especially,only one type of shadowing exercise training is adopted in this experiment,while there are various applying methods for shadowing training.Hence,future studies can focus on carrying out empirical experiments with different shadowing training ways.
