According to English Curriculum Standards for Ordinary Senior High Schools,high school students should be able to understand the meaning conveyed by modern multimodal discourse.However,traditional English reading teaching model,which emphasizes mono-modal input,has some limitations,such as the boring atmosphere and insufficient interaction.Thus,English teachers should be aware of the importance of multimodal English reading teaching.Guided by Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Theory of Multimodal Discourse Analysis,this empirical study aims to investigate the effects of multimodal English reading teaching model on high school students' English reading performance,English reading attitudes and their perceptions of this new model by drawing on the data from tests,questionnaires and interviews.The study is based on a three-month teaching experiment among 74 Senior Two students in Fuzhou No.15 Middle School.The findings of the study are as follows:(1)Multimodal English reading teaching model can improve high school students' English reading performance.For one thing,teachers design various meaningful learning activities and guide students to analyze the texts with the help of multimodal resources;for another,students understand the texts and acquire knowledge by finishing meaningful learning tasks.Besides,students also develop their reading strategies(e.g.,skimming,scanning)and abilities(e.g.,predicting,summarizing).(2)Multimodal English reading teaching model can improve high school students' English reading attitudes.With regard to the three components of English reading attitudes,the affective attitude and conative attitude are significantly improved while the cognitive attitude is not.Multimodal teaching model can create a vivid and realistic learning environment which stimulates different senses of students.Thus,students have a positive attitude towards English reading and show great initiative in participating in reading activities during the teaching experiment.(3)High school students are satisfied with multimodal English reading teaching model.It is founded that video mode is the most popular mode and “written language + oral language + video” is the most popular mode combination according to the interviews.However,the teacher should consider the coordination among different modes and use various teaching resources and devices in a proper way.In summary,it is feasible and effective to apply multimodal English reading teaching model in senior high schools.The significance of the study lies in contributing to the growing research interest in multimodal teaching model and making suggestions for better English reading teaching practices.
