The development of globalization has enhanced exchanges among nations, and people can get to know the cultures of different countries easily. As a carrier of culture, documentary can effectively disseminate a country's culture. But the differences in languages and cultures will bring difficulties to the target-language audience. So subtitle translation is particularly important.Due to the lack of researches on documentary subtitle translation, this thesis provides some practical translation methods through the study of documentary subtitle translation, aiming to provide reference for future research.Based on Relevance Theory, this thesis aims to study the documentary subtitle translation by taking the documentary Chef's Table as an example and makes an analysis from three aspects, including semantics, syntax and context.Achieving the optimal relevance is the goal in subtitle translation. In semantic dimension, translation strategies like addition, annotation, and paraphrasing will be used.Semantic additions are usually supplementary nouns, which makes the translation more accurate.Besides, annotation and paraphrasing are also employed in subtitle translation in semantic dimension. As the language in films and television works tends to be colloquial, corresponding translation strategies should be adopted according to the specific context so as to achieve the optimal relevance. In syntactic dimension, subtitle translation ensures not only the accuracy of the content, but also the conformity to the syntactic structures and the Chinese expressions. With regard to context, the most appropriate translation should be chosen according to the context so as to achieve the optimal relevance, which enables the target-language audience to have the same cultural connotations as the source-language audience. The significance of this research is to analyze the subtitles of Chef's Table from the three levels of semantics, syntax and context by combining Relevance Theory, and verify the feasibility of the theory in the translation of documentary subtitles.Besides, translators take cultural connotations and common expressions of Chinese into consideration and adopt corresponding translation strategies so as to make translation achieve the optimal relevance and let the target-language audience better enjoy the documentary.
