An Analysis Of The Translation Of Long Sentences In English Historical Papers From The Perspective Of Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory

The Second Amendment of the US Constitution and the right o bear arms regulated by this amendment have long been one of the most controversial topics in the US constitutional history.In the translation project,three historical papers about the Second Amendment are selected from Whose Right to Bear Arms Did the Second Amendment Protect,a collection of historical papers.The focus of this translation report is the analysis of features of long sentences in historical papers and exploration of the translation techniques of translating long sentences in historical papers.The extensive use of long sentences is the major characteristic of historical papers.In terms of content,long sentences in the selected papers can be classified into three types:long sentences of arguments or opinions,long sentences of historical facts,and long sentences of legal articles.Because of the extensive use of attributive modifiers,adverbial modifiers and parallel structures,long sentences in historical papers have the feature of complex logical relationship,which is the major difficulty in the process of translation.The foreword of this collection of historical papers points out that the intended readers are ordinary readers,so Newmark's target-reader-oriented communicative translation theory is adopted as a theoretical guidance.According to Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory and the language feature of the text,the translation of long sentences in English historical papers should follow the translation principles of accuracy in translating historical facts,logicality in translating ideas,and readability.Under the guidance of the translation principles,the author applies five specific translation techniques including embedding,dividing,splitting,explication or adjustment of logical relationship,and addition in order to make the translated target text accurate,logical,and readable for general readers.
