Translation Techniques Of Long English Sentences: A Report On The Translation Of Two Sides Of The Moon

The 21 st century is featured by growing economic integration and global cultural communication. Therefore, translators play a more and more important role in this process. As a common language feature in English, the long sentence can be widely found in English texts. The translation of long English sentences is regarded as a primary difficulty in the translation of English texts. In recent years, many domestic scholars have made some researches on the translation of long English sentences and have summarized and accumulated some translation techniques. The Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Nida, which emphasizes on the closest natural equivalence between source-language and target-language version, can be used as an effective guidance in the translation of long English sentences.As students of MTI, we hold that it is very important to combine the theory with practice. If long English sentences can be properly translated, the quality of the translated version will be greatly guaranteed. Therefore, we should not only grasp the translation techniques in long English sentences translation, but also apply them into translation practice.In this report, the author employs the method of example analysis to discuss and explore the translation techniques in long English sentences. Through the analysis of the examples in the light of Functional Equivalence theory proposed by Nida, it is intended to discover effective techniques to the translation of long English sentences. After the careful study of the examples, the following findings can be generated: firstly, the long English sentence is usually complicated and contains rich information, which needs to be properly dealt with; secondly, it is important to rearrange the information units in the translation of long English sentences and translation techniques should be applied in a flexible way; thirdly, the Functional Equivalence theory can shed light on translation to some extent.It is hoped that this report may enrich the research of long English sentence translation and the summary of translation experience can be of some value to other translators.
