A Report On The Long And Complex Sentences Translation In That Summer Under The Guidance Of Communicative Translation Theory

Based on the increasing popularity of English best-selling novels in the Chinese market,translating excellent English novels into Chinese has become the expectation of the majority of Chinese readers.Some Chinese readers especially appreciate American best-selling novelist Jennifer Weiner and her works.Therefore,the excerpt of this translation practice is from Jennifer Weiner’s novel That Summer.Guided by communicative translation theory,the author studies and discusses translation methods and strategies in the process of translating excerpts,using theory to guide practice.Peter Newmark raised the communicative translation theory in 1981 at his age of65,which focuses on reproducing the same effect in the target language as much as possible.Communicative translation should first be faithful to the target language readers,that is,take the target language as the center,respect the language itself and the culture contained,and solve the difficulties and doubts of the readers.Consequently,great importance should be attached to the target language’s dominant position,so that the language of the translated version could be expressed naturally and smoothly,convenient for the readers to accept.In the novel That Summer,there are many long and complex sentences,which are with more than 20 words and complex sentence structure.How to translate them concisely and clearly and make them acceptable to the target readers has brought some difficulties and challenges to the author’s translation and research.As a result,this paper focuses on the analysis of long difficult sentences and the discussion of translation strategies.By adopting the translation strategies of amplification,division,recombination and omission,this paper attempts to more vividly reflect the protagonist’s mental journey,transformation journey and friendship establishment process that the author wants to express in That Summer in the translation,so as to make the readers get the same experience.In addition,the translator further studies,understands and grasps the communicative translation theory,and expects that this translation practice can have a certain reference significance.
