Nowadays, the development of society requires college students to have better oral proficiency, especially for English majors. Therefore it is reasonable to explore the relationship between the use of communication strategies and oral proficiency. As Nakatani(2006)proposed that the use of social affective strategies and fluency-oriented strategies is positively correlated with oral scores. This thesis tends to further investigate the effects of the strategies mentioned above(social affective strategies and fluency-oriented strategies)on English majors' oral scores. And this thesis reports an empirical study of how the introduction of communication strategies could impact oral scores of English majors. The thesis answered the following questions:1.What is the relationship between communication strategies' use and the English majors' oral scores?2.To what extent can the introduction of social affective strategies affect English majors' oral scores?3.To what extent can the introduction of fluency-oriented strategies affect English majors' oral scores?A total of 110 sophomore English majors from three parallel classes at the college of foreign languages of a University in Northeast China took part in the 12-week experiment. There were two experimental classes,Class A and Class B.Social affective strategies were introduced and practiced in Class A within the oral class, while fluency-oriented strategies were introduced and practiced in Class B within the oral class.Class C was the control class, which take the normal oral class. Before the experiment, the students received a questionnaire and a pretest.A comparative analysis of oral pretest scores shows that there was no significant difference of the oral proficiency of the three classes. After the experiment, all the participants in the three classes received the oral post-test.In addition,an interview was conducted in the two experimental classes after the experiment to investigate their idea about the social affective strategies and the fluency-oriented strategies.Independent Sample T-test was used to analyze the pre-and post-test data.Meanwhile the interview records were also carefully analyzed in order to collect more comprehensive qualitative data. And the research results are as follows:1.There is a correlation between the use of oral communication strategies and English learners' oral scores. It can be inferred that people with high oral scores use more social affective strategies and fluency oriented strategies, while people with low oral scores use more information reduction and change strategies and information abandonment strategies.2.The introduction of social affective strategies can significantly improve the oral scores of English majors.More specifically,it could improve the scores of Talking on the Given Topic and Role-playing.The data of interview shows that the introduction of social affective strategies can make the students be more confident and relaxed and perform better in the oral tasks.3.The introduction of fluency-oriented strategies can improve the oral scores of English majors from the overall view. And the introduction of fluency-oriented strategies can significantly improve the scores of Retelling the story and Talking on the Given Topic. The data of interview showed that fluency-oriented strategies could improve the pronunciation and their intonation of the English majors and then makes them perform better in the oral tasks. This study has some teaching implications. In oral English teaching, teachers should choose different communication strategies according to different teaching tasks.Students should learn to choose appropriate strategies according to the situation to make communication more effective.Teachers should encourage students to use communicative strategies and improve learners' awareness of communicative strategies.
