A Comparative Study Of Ontological Thought Between Quine And Badiou

W.V.O.Quine and Alain Badiou are both important philosophers of Science in the field of international philosophy.Comparing Quine's ontological thoughts with that of Badiou's,there are few studies abroad,let alone in China.This paper has three aspects of research significance.First,this paper will help to promote the study of Badiou under the tradition of "logistics-philosophy",and promote the transformation process of Badiou's philosophy system from "unrecognizable things" to "rich thought treasury".Second,this paper will help to promote the study of Quine's thought in the later years in the domestic philosophy circle,and promote the integration of the domestic philosophy circle and the international philosophy circle in the criticism of "analytical philosophy revisionism".Third,for the development of international philosophy research,this paper will help to break the barriers of departmentalism and strengthen the communication between European Philosophy and British and American philosophy.A comparative study of Quine's ontological thoughts and Badiou's ontological thoughts is of great theoretical significance.Based on the theoretical background of mathematical realism,this paper makes a comparative study of Quine and Badiou's ontological thoughts under the traditional theoretical framework of "logistics-philosophy",and discusses the transcendence of Badiou's ontological thoughts to Quine's ontological thoughts.There are two main theoretical paths of ontology study in the 20 th century,that is,the research path focusing on the theme meaning and the research path focusing on the domain meaning.Quine's and Badiou's ontological studies focus on the latter.Both Quine and Badiou's have certain theoretical foundation of mathematical logic and set theory,but Badiou's understanding of set theory is deeper than Quine's.The ontology study focusing on domain meaning mostly discusses the problem of ontology with the help of mathematical logic tools.Both Quine and Badiou think that "set theory is ontology".In a sense,set theory is the ontology of mathematical world.Quine and Badiou have realized the logic modeling in the cognizance of identity and the empirical world respectively,from the ontological study of the mathematics world into that of the empirical world.Badiou's way of entering the empirical world from the ontological study of the mathematical world is superior to Quine's way.Quine's ontology and even Quine's quasi-philosophy system are important parts of the tradition of "analytical philosophy revisionism".Logistics is the wing of philosophy,which let philosophy fly.Quine's quasi-philosophical system has a strong deconstruction,while Badiou's philosophy system has a strong constructiveness.Thus,Quine's and Badiou's philosophical systems show distinct differences.Their ontology have strong external correlation in the background,but not necessarily have strong internal causality in the conclusion.In a word,Badiou's ontology is beyond Quine's.Badiou's ontology and even his philosophical system have the theoretical progress ahead of the times and have the turning significance in the history of philosophy.There are two main possible innovative points in this paper.One is this paper makes an early,comparative study of Quine's and Badiou's ontological thoughts in the domestic philosophy circle.The other is this paper studies Badiou's ontological thoughts under the background of "logistics-philosophy" in the domestic philosophy circle,which is helpful to promote the further,profound research of Badiou in the domestic philosophy circle.
