An E-C Translation Report On Daily Life In The Mongol Empire (Chapter 4)

This is an English-Chinese translation report based on the Daily life of the Mongol Empire whose writer is George Lane,and the translator takes the fourth chapter of the book as the source text for translation.The source text consists of 12 chapters in total,and the selected chapter is Chapter 4 “Dwelling”.The book mainly shows us the daily life of the ordinary Mongols from several aspects including appearance,the army,religion,food and other aspects.This report analyzes the selected text from its background,process,and case analysis.Because the selected text is a historical text,involving a large amount of historical and cultural content,it is difficult to understand and translate the text.The translator solves the translation difficulties at the lexical level and syntactic level in the process of translating by using translation methods and techniques.Firstly,difficulties at the lexical level contain the translation of proper nouns and culture-loaded words.Difficulties at the syntactic level include compound and long sentences.Considering the differences between Chinese and English,the translator adopted a set of translation methods and techniques including annotation,conversion and transliteration to solve the difficulties at the lexical level.Division,amplification and reinventing sentence structure are employed to solve the difficulties at the syntactic level,of which attributive clauses are more difficult to translate,so preposition and postposition are used to solve difficulties.Finally,the translation report summarizes the translator's experience in the process of translating and the defects of the translation report.Since Daily life of the Mongol Empire serves as a history book that depicts ordinary people's life of the Mongol Empire,it is necessary to increase the readability of the version.To some extent,it is expected to provide a certain degree of references for the Mongol historical materials and help to understand dwelling of the Mongols through the translation of this chapter.
