The translation project is based on an excerpt from the book The Mongol Empire: Genghis Khan, His Heirs and the Founding of Modern China. The book is written by John Man. It is a book with rich contents and it pictures a prairie conqueror. It mainly talks about legendary figures and the rise of nation and introduces the efforts that Genghis Khan, His Heirs, have made for the empire. The author intends to explain the process of the Mongol Empire's building with his unique Western view. Due to the different thinking styles between westerners and easterners, it is inevitable to do a lot of work on words' handling. The object of this translation project is to reproduce the author's understanding of China with an acceptable version to Chinese. Domesticating translation is used in this project with the guide of the Functional Equivalence Theory. This project intends to make translation texts close to the source texts as well as help readers have a better understanding. Besides, historical events, people and their name should be paid more attention by checking the historical books related to Chinese history. There are four parts in this translation project. Part one is the introduction of the project, including the project background, objectives and significance. Part two is the analysis of the book and excerpted parts. Part three is about translation difficulties and methods. There are some examples to demonstrate the translation methods, which are discussed in the light of the the functional equivalence theory. Part four is the summarization, implication and unsolved problems in the translation project.
