The Wisdom of the Middle Ages is a book by American writer Michael k.Kellogg published in 2016.He investigates important works from late antiquity to the early Renaissance, revealing the different depth of thought and expression in the middle ages. The translator selects the contents of the first chapter of the book for translation practice, which introduces the new testament and the founding of Christianity.Up to now, there is no Chinese translation of this book. This is an English-Chinese translation practice report. To translate English into Chinese is not only a mutual conversion between two languages but also communication between two cultures. Moreover, the source text is related to religion,so it is an excellent task for the translator to translate the words and sentences containing cultural factors. Therefore, the translator summarizes the vocabulary in the religious field as the difficulty, translating the vocabulary containing cultural information using transliteration, annotation, and choice of the meaning words, and using the translation method of conversion to conform to Chinese expression habits. There are significant differences between English and Chinese at the syntactic level, the translator uses the translation methods of linear translation and reinventing sentence structures to solve syntactic difficulties. Finally,by summarizing the difficulties and methods of translation, the translator can have a deeper understanding of the translation methods and techniques. The translator concludes that when translating a text containing cultural information,it is necessary to understand its background information fully. The translation should conform to the expression habits of the target language and try to avoid obscure meanings.Appropriate translation methods and techniques should be used according to the translated text.
